Die Schwierigkeit, Henry James Geistergeschichte nicht eindeutig lesen und bewerten zu können, macht sie besonders reizvoll und einzigartig. Ein Aspekt, unter dem man sich Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw nähern kann, ist verbunden mit der Frage, ob die Gouvernante einen gefallenen Engel oder eine neurotische Mörderin verkörpert. Die Beantwortung dieser Frage ist abhängig von der Einstellung, inwiefern die Geistererscheinungen für die Gouvernante Realität oder Imagination sind.
Henry James selbst sah The Turn of the Screw als 'a piece of ingenuity pure and simple' und 'an irresponsible little fiction', 'a work of cold artistic calculation'1. In diesem Zusammenhang ist zu hinterfragen, ob 'gestörte' Sexualität, wie sie Edmund Wilson in seinem Essay “The Ambiguity of Henry James”2 verwendet, tatsächlich als Erklärungsmodell für die Geistergestalten und die Schuld der Gouvernante dienen kann. Der Versuch, das Verhalten der Gouvernante mit wissenschaftlicher Methode bis in das kleinste Detail zu analysieren, sich daraufhin nicht nur ein Urteil über ihren Geisteszustand-, sondern Ableitungen über ihre unterdrückte Sexualität zu machen, scheint in den von Sigmund Freuds Psychoanalyse inspirierten Interpretationen übertieben.
Bei meiner Gegenüberstellung der psychoanalytischen Perspektive Stanley Renners (basierend auf Wilsons These) und der religiösen Betrachtungsweise Dorothea Krooks3 (basierend auf Robert Bechthold Heilman) nehme ich James’ Äußerung über die Simplizität der Geschichte als Ausgangspunkt und bin überzeugt, dass für die Gouvernante die Geister tatsächlich existent sind. Aus ihrem Glauben heraus, sieht sich die Gouvernante in der Rolle des gutmütigen Engels. Tatsächlich ist sie jedoch nur ein Mensch und in ihrem Übereifer selbst anfällig für das Böse, im Versuch die ihrer Ansicht nach manipulierten Kinder vor ihrem „Schicksal“ der Verdammung zu bewahren.
