Ihre Anlegung als Eingriff in den urbanen Lebensraum soll erörtert und ihre Beschreibung als „Konkretisierung der sozialen Skulptur“ kri-tisch hinterfragt werden. Dafür wird es notwendig sein, die verschiedenen Dimensio-nen dieses Werkes, ihre Entstehungsgeschichte und ihre Stellung innerhalb des Ge-samtwerkes von Beuys zu beleuchten. Ausserdem wird zur Beurteilung der Arbeit auch die Rezeption in der Bevölkerung zu beachten sein.

Die Arbeit beginnt mit einer Werkbeschreibung und einer Darstellung des Entste-hungsprozesses von «7000 Eichen». Danach wird der erweiterte Kunstbegriff von Jo-seph Beuys und der von ihm gebildete Begriff der Sozialen Skulptur vorgestellt. Die-ses Kapitel beinhaltet auch einen kurzen Abriss über die Stellung von «7000 Eichen» innerhalb des Gesamtwerkes von Beuys. Im Anschluss daran wird die Rezeption des Werkes untersucht. Im abschliessenden Schlussteil soll die Frage geklärt werden, ob «7000 Eichen» tatsächlich die von Beuys beabsichtigte Wirkung zu erzielen ver-mochte.

Der Initiator des Projektes konnte die Pflanzung des 7000sten und letzten Baumes pünktlich zum Eröffnungstag der documenta 8 am 12. Juni 1987 nicht mehr miterle-ben. Joseph Beuys starb gut ein Jahr vorher an einer schweren Krankheit.
