würde ich antworten, müsste ich mit zehn Worten umschreiben, was
Matthew Gregory Lewis’ The Monk und E.T.A. Hoffmanns Die Elixiere des
Teufels verbindet. Natürlich werde ich mit einer solchen Aussage keinem
der beiden Werke gerecht. Und doch: so unterschiedlich die Romane in
Aufbau und Sprache auch sind, wenn man über diese Texte spricht, sollte
erwähnt werden, dass es sich hier eigentlich um ein Plagiat handelt, um
mehr als eine „thematische Inspiration“1. In seinem Schauerroman von 1815
übernimmt Hoffmann die Grundhandlung, Figuren und sogar einzelne
Szenen von Lewis’ neunzehn Jahre zuvor erschienener Gothic Novel. Die
Protagonisten beider Bücher entwickeln sich vom frommen, gelübdetreuen
Klosterbruder zum teuflisch lüsternen Mönch, der seine kirchliche
Machtposition missbraucht, um sexuelle Wünsche auszuleben. Die Werke
erscheinen jedoch unterschiedlich in ihrem Fort- und Ausgang, sie
verweben religiöse Motive und Kirchenkritik auf solch verschiedene Weise,
dass sie beide zu einer diesbezüglichen Analyse anregen, die ich im
Folgenden versuchen werde.
