Conrad sieht Introspektion als "hallmark of artistic creation". Er glaubt nicht daran, daß es in der Welt objektiv zu erkennende Wahrheiten gibt und erklärt somit die persönliche Erfahrung, das individuelle Bewußtsein zum einzig möglichen Ausgangspunkt künstlerischen Schaffens.3 Trotz dieser stark subjektivistischen Einstellung zum künstlerischen Schaffensprozeß ist Conrad jedoch davon überzeugt, daß diese "private vision" kommunizierbar sein muß.4 Locke hat in seinem 1670 entstanden Werk Ein Versuch über den menschlichen Verstand das menschlichen Bewußtsein als tabula rasa formuliert, das erst durch Erfahrungen seine individuellen Züge annimmt und das dann assoziativ auf dieselben zurückgreift. Conrad übernimmt Lockes Annahme von der strukturellen Ähnlichkeit der Funktionsweise menschlicher Gehirne und geht davon aus, daß die assoziative Wiedergabe von Impressionen und Gedanken die einzige Möglichkeit darstellt, die potentiellen Rezipienten seiner literarischen Werke zu erreichen.
