Alexander Sutherland Neill (1883 - 1973) war ein schottischer Pädagoge. Als Lehrer an staatlichen Schulen machte er Erfahrungen mit dem repressiven Dressursystem der öffentlichen Erziehungsanstalten Englands. Diese negativen Erfahrungen formten den Kontrasthintergrund für seine revolutionäre Pädagogik und führten 1921 zur Gründung seiner mittlerweile weltberühmten Internatsschule von Summerhill.

Antiautoritäre Erziehung?
Die deutsche Erstausgabe von Neills Buch „Summerhill – A Radical Approach to Child Rearing“ erhielt den Titel „Erziehung in Summerhill – das revolutionäre Beispiel einer freien Schule“ und war ein Flop. 1969 entschied sich der Rowohlt-Verlag das gleiche Werk noch einmal herauszubringen. Diesmal, dem Zeitgeist entsprechend als „Theorie und Praxis der antiautoritären Erziehung - das Beispiel Summerhill“, und siehe da, die gewagte Übersetzung bescherte dem Buch den Status eines Bestsellers. Der Begriff „antiautoritäre Erziehung“ fand vor allem bei den Studenten der 68er Generation begeisterten Anklang und wird bis heute gemeinhin mit dem Namen Neill und seinem Summerhill Projekt assoziiert.
