Jetzt schlug er sein tiefgraues Jackett auseinander, und die staunenden Bürger von Seminole bekamen eine kanariengelbe Weste mit bizarr-verschlungenen schwarzen Stickereien zu sehen. Mac Shipwell lüftete seinen halbhohen hellgrauen Zylinderhut und tat so, als werde er von irgendeiner noch unsichtbaren Abordnung empfangen. Hatten die Seminoler schon über Mac Shipwell gestaunt, so bekamen sie jetzt den Mund und die Augen nicht mehr zu. Hinter dem Dandy wurde im Overland-Türschlag ein gutgeformtes Mädchenbein sichtbar, das in einem roten Schnürschuh steckte. Die dazugehörige junge Dame folgte mit dem nächsten Fuß, zeigte ein hübsches, allerdings millimeterdick mit Schminke und Puder bedecktes Gesicht, eine Doppelreihe perlengleicher Zähne und ein hellblaues, langbewimpertes Augenpaar. Eingerahmt war dieses Gesicht von einer Lockenfülle, die vielleicht ein paar Töne zu hell sein mochte. Das Kleid der Schönen war aus blauem Stoff und schien einer Theatergarderobe entliehen zu sein.
