In der gegenwärtigen Zeit lässt sich im Klimawandel eines der größten Umweltprobleme identifizieren, denen der Mensch sowohl heute als auch in den nächsten Jahrzehnten gegenüberstehen wird. Dies lässt sich insbesondere in den verschiedenen Wetterphänomen erkennen, wie sie in den letzten Jahren weltweit aufgetreten sind. Auch in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland hat diese Entwicklung einen nicht unerheblichen Einfluss auf die klimatischen Verhältnisse ausgeübt. Als Beispiele lassen sich hier unter anderem das Jahrhunderthochwasser der Elbe im Jahre 2002 beziehungsweise der außergewöhnlich trockene Sommer im Jahre 2003 anführen. Dieser Klimawandel, welcher auch als globale Erwärmung bezeichnet wird, beinhaltet den allmählichen Anstieg der Durchschnittstemperatur der erdnahen Atmosphäre sowie der Meere. Eine weitere Erwärmung für die nahe Zukunft wird durch die Wissenschaft bereits heute prognostiziert, welche in der Verstärkung des Treibhauseffektes durch den Menschen zu suchen ist. Der Treibhauseffekt wird durch wichtige Treibhausgase wie Wassserdampf (H2O), Kohlenstoffdioxid (CO2), Methan (CH4), Distickstoffoxid (N2O) sowie chemischen Verbindungen wie FCKW und FKW angetrieben. Die von der Sonne ausgesandte kurzwellige Strahlung passiert die Atmosphäre und trifft auf die Erdoberfläche auf. Im Gegenzug werden langwellige Strahlen von der Erdoberfläche abgestrahlt und in der Atmosphäre fast vollständig absorbiert. Durch das bestehende thermische Gleichgewicht wird die absorbierte Energie zu je fünfzig Prozent ins Weltall und auf die Erde abgestrahlt.
