Diese Suche des Menschen nach den Ursachen von beobachteten Verhaltensweisen ist der Gegenstand der Attributionstheorie.

Der Begriff Attribution kommt aus dem Englischen (to attribute = zuschreiben) und steht für die Ursachenzuschreibung, welche der Alltagsmensch Ereignissen, Objekten und/oder dem Verhalten von Menschen zuordnet und anhand derer er Bewertungen vornimmt. Die Attributionstheorie versucht zu erklären, wie der „Mann auf der Straße als naiver Psychologe“ (MEYER&FÖRSTERLING; 1993) zu Ursachenzuschreibungen oder kausalen Schlussfolgerungen gelangt und welche kognitiven Prozesse dabei zum Einsatz kommen. Darauf aufbauende attributionale Theorien beschäftigen sich mit der Anwendung der Attributionstheorien für die Vorhersage menschlichen Erlebens und Verhaltens (RUDOLPH; 2003).

Im Rahmen der vorliegenden Arbeit werden die grundlegenden Konzepte der Attributionstheorie(n) vorgestellt, insbesondere die Arbeiten von Fritz HEIDER und Harold KELLEY, Aspekte der darauf aufbauenden weiteren Forschung sowie einige kritische Aspekte der Theorien und eine Reflexion der Erkenntnisse für den betrieblichen oder organisationalen Kontext.
