Er war groß, breitschultrig und schmalhüftig, hatte ein wettergebräuntes Gesicht, das von zwei tiefblauen Augen beherrscht wurde. Den schwarzen flachkronigen Hut trug er in die Stirn gedrückt. Das graue Kattunhemd wurde am Hals von einer schwarzen Schleife zusammengehalten. Die enge Hose des schwarzen Anzuges lief über die hochhackigen Stiefelschäfte. Um die Hüften trug der Mann einen breiten büffelledernen Waffengurt, der an beiden Seiten zwei große Revolver in den Halftern hielt. Der Mann hatte ein offenes, kantiges, angenehmes Gesicht. Eben nahm er eine große schwarze Zigarre aus der Tasche, entflammte ein Zündholz an der Stiefelsohle und zündete die Zigarre an. Gedankenverloren blickte er über den Wasserspiegel zu den Bergen hinüber, die das westliche Ufer säumten. Im Roten Salon des Dampfers ging es schon hoch her. Die sechs grünbezogenen Spieltische waren vollbesetzt. Die Neugierigen schoben sich in den Gängen.

Rechts hinten in der Ecke standen die meisten Menschen.
