Robert Altman, der Maestro des Ensemblefilms ist im November 2006 verstorben. A Prairie Home Companion –in Deutschland aus werbestrategischen Erwägungen noch flugs zu Robert Altman´s Last Radio Show- umbenannt, ist Altmans letzter Film, und wie immer versteht es der Regisseur alle Register seines Könnens, wenngleich in diesem Fall dezenter, zu ziehen. In vielen Beiträgen ist immer wieder darüber spekuliert worden, inwieweit Altman sich seines nahenden Todes beim Dreh bewusst war, und an welchen Stellen des Filmes sein ganz persönlicher Abschied spürbar wird, und wie das Wissen um den eigenen Tod die gesamte Atmosphäre des Filmes prägt. Zweifelsohne: durch den ganzen Film hindurch geht es um Abschied, um Abschied nehmen, um Nostalgie, aber auch um die Wahrung der wehenden und wohligen Erinnerungen, denn sie sind es die schlussendlich und allein übrig bleiben, vom und im Großen und Ganzen. Und genau hierum geht es, und um die Freude Altmans einen Makrokosmos zu entwerfen, bei dem es munter zugeht, bei dem wie die großen und kleinen Leiden seiner Protagonisten hautnah mitfühlen dürfen. Der Altmeister unter den amerikanischen Regisseuren, der einst das New Hollywood Kino mitprägte, und dessen Primat es stets war nicht in die Fänge der Hollywood Unterhaltungsindustrie und Machenschaften zu geraten (genau dies Thematisiert es in seiner Satire The Player von 1992) und von diesen abhängig zu bleiben, war in Stilwillen und Stilprägung unverkennbar. Wie jeder gute Regisseur hatte er auch Filme produziert die von der Qualität womöglich eher dem Mittelmaß zu zurechnen sind. Aber in jeder Karriere und jedem Schaffen, wo es viel Licht gibt, muss es auch den einen oder anderen Schatten geben.
