Das zweite Kapitel ("Der mündige Patient") ist dem Verständnis von Mündigkeit gewidmet, einem der heute am meisten fehlgedeuteten und mißverstandenen Begriffe.
Die in den weiteren Kapiteln aufgegriffenen Themen entstammen der unmittelbaren Erfahrungs- und Erlebnissphäre der heutigen Medizinpraxis. Zum Teil handelt es sich dabei um überarbeitete Vorträge oder in Zeitschriften publizierte Arbeiten. Übergeordnete Probleme werden erörtert, wie die Humanität der Medizin, Fragen der medizinischen Ausbildung, das Problem der Technisierung, das Bild des Arztes in der Funktion des Vorbildes. Ferner wird zu konkreten Detailfragen Stellung bezogen: Das Aufklärungsgespräch, von den Grenzen des Machbaren, das Tarifrecht, von der Bedeutung der Erfahrung u. a.
Das Buch ist in erster Linie an Ärzte gerichtet, nicht weniger aber an alle anderen Berufsgruppen, die in der Medizin, in der medizinischen Versorgung von Patienten ihre Aufgabe gefunden haben. Angesprochen aber ist auch die andere Seite, der Patient und all jene, die sich in irgendeiner Weise mit der Medizin auseinandersetzen.
Beide Seiten tragen schließlich dazu bei, daß Vertrauen entstehen und erhalten bleiben kann.
