Somit ist der Mitarbeiter eine entscheidende Erfolgsgröße im Wettbewerb. Sowohl die Übernahme größerer Verantwortung aufgrund der organisatorischen Veränderung als auch das Denken und Handeln im Sinne des Unternehmens gehören zu den geforderten Aufgaben des Mitarbeiters. Damit er diese auch ausübt, ist eine geeignete Steuerung des Mitarbeiterverhaltens notwendig. Es ist davon auszugehen, dass das Zielsystem des Unternehmens mit den Zielen des Mitarbeiters nur teilweise übereinstimmen. Um das erwünschte Verhalten des Mitarbeiters, das heißt auf Unternehmensziele ausgerichtetes Verhalten, zu erzielen, müssen die langfristigen Interessen des Unternehmens und die eher kurzfristigen Interessen des Mitarbeiters harmonisiert werden. Diese Harmonisierung soll durch Anreize erfolgen, die den Mitarbeiter zu mehr Leistung motivieren sollen, um somit am Unternehmenserfolg engagiert mitzuarbeiten.
