Seit nahezu 40 Jahren widmet sich Werner Besch der Erforschung des Frühneuhochdeutschen. Möglichkeiten der Lautwertbestimmung an deutschen Handschriften des späten Mittelalters in der Zeitschrift für Deutsche Philologie. Während der Folgezeit entstand - und entsteht weiterhin - eine reiche Fülle von Publikationen zu zentralen Fragen des Frühneuhochdeutschen.
Mit Bedacht wurde deshalb 1998 zum 70. Geburtstag des «Altmeisters» von seinen Schülern ein Kolloquium veranstaltet, in dessen Mittelpunkt das Frühneuhochdeutsche als sprachhistorische Epoche stand. Die Erträge dieser Zusammenkunft hervorragender Fachgelehrter aus dem In- und Ausland versammelt dieser Band.
