Emile Bertrand est né en 1954. Il a fait des études en économie, gestion et philosophie. Il vit à Liège où il a travaillé durant des années dans le secteur des assurances. Dorénavant, il consacre une partie de ses loisirs aux sports et à l'écriture.

Les conditions atmosphériques étaient vraiment exécrables, elles auraient fait frémir la plupart des hommes en les astreignant à se calfeutrer dans leur maison. Le coeur de la montagne nous envoyait une neige drue, une brume enveloppante et un vent fort, gelant, capable d’unir l’eau et le feu ou de relier la terre et l’air. Nous venions de passer quelques jours radieux qui nous auraient fait oublier cette fin du mois de janvier durant lequel, la grande dame, du haut de ses deux mille cinq cents mètres, rappelait la frontière entre la montagne et les hommes. Elle manifestait un besoin de se réserver un moment privilégié, de se ressourcer en elle-même, avant d’entamer le passage entre la mort de l’hiver et la résurrection printanière.

Nous étions prêts à partir. Je pris mes deux sacs à dos, je fermai le chalet et, suivi des deux chiens, je me rendis vers le lieu de rendez-vous au centre du village.
