Chr.) verbindet man im Allgemeinen die Zuwendung eines römischen Kaisers zum Christentum und in Folge dessen Förderung zur Staatsreligion. In dieser Arbeit soll diese Thematik näher beleuchtet werden. Dabei wird nach einem einleitenden kurzen Abriss zu Konstantins Leben mit seinen wichtigsten Etappen und der Innenpolitik, hier v.a. der Gesetzgebung, auf die Konstantinische Wende und deren entscheidende Ereignisse eingegangen werden. Schließlich soll noch kurz das Bild Konstantins, das die Menschen in der Spätantike von ihm hatten, aufgezeigt werden.
Unter der Konstantinischen Wende versteht man die Hinwendung Konstantins zum christlichen Glauben sowie die Abkehr von den heidnischen Göttern und Bräuchen sowie dem Polytheismus im Allgemeinen. Die Konstantinische Wende wurde in früheren Zeiten oft als „Fundament der abendländisch-christlichen Geschichte“ gesehen und Konstantin als zweiter Reichsbegründer nach Augustus. Beschäftigt man sich mit dieser Materie, so kommen zweifelsohne einige Fragen auf, die es zu beantworten gilt: wann hat die Wende stattgefunden? Fand sie tatsächlich statt? Wie sind die historischen Fakten, wie die Leitgedanken des Kaisers? Waren Letztere eher religiös, politisch oder persönlich gesinnt? Ist die Wende als punktuelles Ereignis oder als längere Entwicklung zu sehen? Man muss darüber hinaus zwischen der Religionspolitik und dem persönlichen Glauben des Kaisers unterscheiden. Nicht zuletzt ist auch der Aspekt zu beachten, dass in der Wende die Hinwendung der Kirche zur machtbesessenen Institution gesehen wird.
