Situative Einflussfaktoren, wie die Komplexität einer Situation, d.h. zum Beispiel die Interdependenz von verschiedenen Faktoren oder Teilplänen innerhalb des Managements, die Dynamik einer Situation, also Änderungsraten und das Entwicklungstempo einzelner Faktoren und letzten Endes das Ausmaß der Ungewissheit sind Grund genug dafür, dass eine Unternehmung in komplexen und turbulenten Situationen und Zeiten grundsätzlich anders zu leiten ist, als eine Unternehmung, die einer einfachen, statischen und stets transparenten Situation und Umwelt entgegensteht. Doch nach Bleicher ist es weniger die gestiegene Vielfalt an Aufgaben und die Komplexität der Verhältnisse, mit der sich das heutige Management im gesellschaftlichen und ökonomischen Umfeld auseinandersetzen muss, als vielmehr jene Beschleunigung, mit der sich die Grunddaten, Aufgaben und Anforderungen des Managements verändern. Da Beschleunigung jedoch immer etwas mit Zeit zu tun hat, wird diese zur kritischen Variable im Führungsprozess und somit bedeutsam für das Management. Mit zunehmender Veränderungsgeschwindigkeit der Umwelt gewinnen zukunftsbezogene Plangrößen immer mehr an Bedeutung. Führungskräfte von heute müssen ihren „Blick auf die Veränderung der Unternehmung in der Zeit [...] richten. Das Gestrige ist die Wurzel des Heutigen und dieses wiederum entscheidet über das Morgen. Die Veränderung der Unternehmung im Laufe der Zeit wird [...] zum zentralen Anliegen des Managements.“ Doch nicht nur die allgemeine Veränderung der Umwelt und infolge dessen auch die Veränderung der Unternehmung im Laufe der Zeit, stellt das Management vor neue Herausforderungen, sondern vielmehr ist es der Zeitfaktor an sich, der für das Management eine immer größere Rolle spielt. Darüber hinaus spielt Zeitdruck eine große Rolle, unter dem Manageraufgaben erledigt werden müssen. Zeit wird somit zu einem bedeutsamen Faktor.
