Dezember 1879 im schweizerischen Münchenbuchsee als Sohn einer schweizerischen Sängerin und einem deutschen Musiklehrer geboren; die Kinder- und Jugendjahre verbrachte Klee jedoch mit seiner Familie in Bern. 1898 nahm er ein Malstudium in München auf und arbeitete in der Akademie von Franz von Stuck. In den Jahren 1901 und 1902 reiste Klee zusammen mit Hermann Haller nach Italien und wohnte in den darauf folgenden Jahren, abgesehen von einer Reise 1905 nach Paris, in Bern. 1906 heiratete Klee Lily Stumpf und übersiedelte mit ihr zusammen nach München, woraufhin ein Jahr später sein Sohn Felix geboren wurde. Die erste Ausstellung Klees fand 1910 im Berner Kunstmuseum, in Zürich, in Winterthur und in Basel statt. 1911 machte er die Bekanntschaft von Kandinsky, Macke, Marc und Kubin sowie die der übrigen Mitglieder des „Blauen Reiters“, so dass er im darauf folgenden Jahr an der zweiten Ausstellung des „Blauen Reiters“ teilnahm. Insbesondere die Tunesienreise, die Klee 1914 mit Macke und Moilliet unternahm, hatte großen Einfluss auf seine Malerei; er entdeckte die Farbe als Möglichkeit und Notwendigkeit und setzte sich außerdem mit dem Kubismus auseinander. Er forschte nach der Essenz der materiellen Welt, studierte ihre verborgene Struktur, untersuchte organische Strukturen unter dem Mikroskop und beschäftigte sich mit jenen Aspekten der Natur, die bisher noch nie Gegenstand der Malerei gewesen waren. In den Jahren 1916-18 diente er beim Militär. 1920 wurde er durch Walter Gropius als Lehrer an das Bauhaus in Weimar berufen, wo er zunächst als Formmeister, dann in einer Malklasse unterrichtet. Hier, und später auch am Dessauer Bauhaus, lehrte er bis 1931, während er 1924 mit Kandinsky, Feininger und Jawlensky die Gruppe „Die blauen Vier“ gründete. An der Düsseldorfer Kunstakademie erhielt er 1931 einen Lehrauftrag, wurde jedoch 1933 durch die neuen nationalsozialistischen Machthaber entlassen und siedelte nach Bern über. In Bern erhielt er Besuche von Picasso, Braque und Kirchner. Im Jahre 1940, am 29. Juni, verstarb Klee bei Locarno am Lago Maggiore.
