Der Reiter trug eine schwarze Lederjacke, ein rotes Hemd und lederne Hosen, die über die hochhackigen, mit texanischen Steppereien besetzten Stiefel liefen. Um seine Hüften saß ein patronengespickter Waffengurt aus schwarzem Büffelleder, der an beiden Seiten tief über den Oberschenkeln einen großen Revolver hielt. Leichtfüßig trabte der prächtig gewachsene Schwarzfalbe durch die Talsenke auf die Stadt zu. Hundert Yards vor dem ersten Haus stand links am Weg ein hoher Pfahl, an dem ein Schuld befestigt war, das die Aufschrift DEL NORTE trug. Der Reiter nahm die Zügel auf und ritt weiter. Bald säumten rechts und links zweigeschossige Holzhäuser die Straße. Unter den Vorbauten saßen die Männer auf Schaukelstühlen und blickten dem Reiter nach.
