Die gesundheitspolitische Relevanz dieses Themas ergibt sich aus der zunehmenden Prävalenz des Drogenkonsums und bislang noch nicht abschließend geklärter Langzeitfolgen. Die neuronalen und neurotoxischen Wirkmechanismen scheinen sich über nahezu alle Substanzen hinweg im Neurotransmittersystem niederzuschlagen und, je nach Substanz, strukturelle und funktionale Anomalitäten zur Folge zu haben. Diese Effekte äußern sich auch in
neuropsychologischen Tests. Insgesamt ist das gesamte Forschungsgebiet durch eine große methodologische Heterogenität und teilweise durch widersprüchliche
Befunde geprägt. Gründe könnten u.a. in der mangelnden Kontrolle von Stichprobeneffekten sowie der Anwendung vielfältiger neuropsychologischer Messinstrumente, zum Teil mit unzureichender theoretischer Fundierung, und einer mangelnden Sensitivität dieser Maße gesehen werden.
