erbitterter Gegner der Sozialdemokratie, schloss sich der deutschen Arbeiterbewegung zwar
erst spät an – 1891 war er 45 Jahre alt –, blieb ihr aber bis zum Ende seines Lebens treu. Dass
er zum linken Parteiflügel der alten SPD gehörte und im Zuge der „Großen Spaltung“ ab 1914
zusammen mit Luxemburg, Liebknecht, Zetkin und anderen zum Mitgründer des Spartakus-
Bundes und schließlich der KPD wurde, hat ihm den Status eines „Halbklassikers“ und eine
eigene, 15-Bändige Werksausgabe im SED-Parteiverlag Dietz erworben. Neben den
Schriften zur deutschen Geschichte und zur Geschichte der deutschen Arbeiterbewegung – zu
denken ist hier etwa an seine monumentale Geschichte der deutschen Sozialdemokratie oder
seine Marx-Biographie – nehmen die literaturkritischen und literaturhistorischen Texte den
größten Teil seiner Publizistik ein.
Nach seinem Anschluss an die Sozialdemokratie stellte Mehring sein Schaffen ganz in den
Dienst der Arbeiterbewegung und ihrer Partei; seine Texte erschienen entweder in den
Zeitungen der SPD oder in Broschüren- bzw. Buchform in den Parteiverlagen. Die SPD hatte
keineswegs nur politische und ökonomische Ziele, sondern ihre Arbeit bezog sich auf alle
gesellschaftlichen Bereiche – auch die Kultur. Mehring war dabei einer der ersten, der die
Marx’sche Methode nicht nur auf politische Phänomene, sondern auch auf die historische,
philosophische und kulturelle Tradition anwendete.
Es ging ihm hierbei nicht in erster Linie um die Beschäftigung mit Literatur an sich,
sondern darum, diese Beschäftigung für die Arbeiterbewegung nutzbar zu machen. Eine der
zentralen Fragen war für ihn dabei, welche Rolle Literatur im proletarischen
Emanzipationskampf spielen konnte und sollte? Dazu untersuchte er sie auf ihren
ideologischen Gehalt und versuchte das Verhältnis der Arbeiterbewegung zur bürgerlichen
Literatur sowie Möglichkeiten und Voraussetzungen für das Entstehen einer proletarischen
Literatur zu bestimmen.
