Die "captivity narratives" stellen ein äußerst erfolgreiches und in vielerlei Hinsicht einflussreiches Genre der amerikanischen Literatur dar. Es handelt sich dabei um Berichte aus der Kolonialzeit, in denen weiße Siedler ihre Erlebnisse und Erfahrungen aus ihrer Zeit in indianischer Gefangenschaft schildern. Thematisiert werden dabei überwiegend die Schicksale weißer Frauen, die von Indianern entführt und gefangen gehalten wurden. Lange Zeit stellten diese Aufzeichnungen die einzigen Zeugnisse über die indianische Kultur dar.
Die "captivity narratives" erlangten rasch einen hohen Grad an Beliebtheit. Aus diesem Grund kopierten damals viele Schriftsteller die stoffliche Grundlage und verfassten eine Vielzahl an fiktiven Erzählungen, die das Thema indianische Gefangenschaft aufgriffen.
