Betrachtet man das Werk eines Schriftstellers in seinem literaturgeschichtlichen Kontext, so lassen sich häufig Abhängigkeiten von Vorbildern nachweisen. Diese zu erkennen ist mehr oder weniger leicht. Antike Autoren und insbesondere Catull werden gerne zur Auseinandersetzung und Bereicherung des eigenen Schaffens herangezogen.

Die Rezeption eines Autors prägt das Werk des
Rezipienten und trifft zugleich eine Aussage über die Qualität des Originals. Das Original kann – transformiert durch die Sicht des Rezipienten – unter neuer Perspektive betrachtet werden, es gewinnt durch die Rezeption einen besonderen Wert.

Die Frage nach der Intertextualität hat in der neueren Forschung an Bedeutung gewonnen. Es ist zu berücksichtigen, dass nicht immer ausschließlich das Original rezipiert wurde. Gut erforscht ist beispielsweise, wie Pontano über Martial Catull rezipierte und von Pontano aus dieser durch Martial filtrierte Catull weiterwirkte.

Sind Ähnlichkeiten gefunden worden, liegt eine weitere Schwierigkeit in der richtigen Bewertung. Liegt bewusste Rezeption vor oder sind Ähnlichkeiten auf die gleiche Thematik zurückzuführen? Eine eindeutige Klärung ist nicht immer möglich.

In der vorliegenden Arbeit soll die Wirkungsgeschichte Catulls überblickartig dargestellt werden, ein Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit wird nicht erhoben. Die literarische Nachwirkung Catulls in England und Frankreich wird nur am Rande behandelt. Im Rahmen des Gesamtüberblicks soll der Frage nachgegangen werden, welche Gedichte besonders intensiv bzw. häufig rezipiert wurden, welche Rezeptionsmuster und –Traditionen bestehen. Als Schwerpunktthema wird die Rezeption von c.4 durch Vergil, Catal. 10 dargestellt und ein Ausblick auf die weitere Wirkung dieser Gedichte gegeben.

Abschließend wird die Frage erörtert, welche spezifische Faszination von Catull ausgehen mag, die einen Rezipienten zur Auseinandersetzung mit diesem Autor anregt.
